Robert “Hap” Richards, 88, of Mount Ayr died Dec. 20, 2012, at his home.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, at the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Chris Conklin officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr. Military rites at the cemetery were by American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172 and U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr, was in charge of arrangements. Robert “Hap” Richards, son of Ernest and Elizabeth Moore Richards, was born Jan. 3, 1924, at home near Tingley.

Hap graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1942.

Hap served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On June 11, 1950, Hap married Marilyn R. Denhart in the First Christian Church in Mount Ayr.

Hap worked for R.E.C. from 1947 until his retirement Feb. 1, 1989. In addition to the regular job at R.E.C., Hap also did electrical work on the side.

Hap was a Scout master and active in the First Christian Church and was a deacon for several years. Hap was a member of Mount Ayr Country Club and Ringgold Post No. 172 American Legion.

Hap is survived by his wife Marilyn Richards; children, Debbie (Joe) Murphy and David (Lisa) Richards, all of Mount Ayr; grandchildren, Nicole Murphy of Kansas City, Mo., Wes (Amber) Richards of Leon and Burton Murphy (special friend Molly Lynch) of Mount Ayr; step-grandchildren, Megan (Patrick) Smith of Mount Ayr and Michael Poulos of Greenfield; great-grandchildren, Emma and Jeffrey Richards; special friend Paula Richards Rychnovsky; step-great-grandchildren, Katelynn, Elizabeth, Emily and Joshua; siblings, Charles (Donna) Richards of Mount Ayr, Ann (Bill) Sickels of Brenhan, Texas, and Sue Sickels of Indianola; brother-in-law Bob Jacobson of Carolina Shores, N.C., and sister-in-law Jean Richards of Eugene, Ore.

Hap was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marion (Charles) Skinner, Bonnie (Bob) Pratt, Jane (Floy) Hutt, Allen (Lila) Richards, Bill Richards and Connie Jacobson; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Raymond Sickels, Don (Lucille) Denhart, Doyle (Carolyn) Denhart and Margaret (Frank) McClurg and parents-in-law, Lloyd and Lela Denhart.
