Catholic Daughters of the Americas met in the parish hall after Mass celebrated by the Rev. Ken Halbur.

Vice Regent Retta Ripperger led members in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The minutes were read, and Carol McKee made a motion to approve the minutes and Lois Nelson seconded it.

For the treasurer’s report, it was reported the bake sale netted $449.71. The club received a dividend check for $64.65 from Alliant Energy. There is also a CD in the amount of $1,500. The interest from this CD goes into the checking account.

Some members are still not getting the “Voice” magazine, so Carolyn will check on this.

In new business, there was a discussion to give the Rev. Halbur a Christmas present. Jean Miller made a motion to give him a specified amount and Arlene seconded it.

The next meeting will be Jan. 8, and members will be having pizza. There is a choice of watching a movie titled “Standing Strong” or playing games.

There will be a memorial service for abortion babies 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at the cemetery.

The National CD of A convention will be in Fort Dodge April 19. CD of A needs to donate an item to this for an auction. It was suggested to donate a spring wreath. Betty and Teresa will purchase this.

A motion was made by McKee to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Mary McElroy.

The half and half was won by McKee.

Afton Federated Garden Club

Afton Federated Garden Club met 11:30 a.m. Dec. 14 at Arispe Feed and Grain for its December meeting and Christmas party. Before lunch, President Vicki held a short informal meeting. Roll call was answered by 16 members and one guest Nancy Forrest. Minutes for the previous meeting and the financial report were read and approved.

Dues were collected for the 2013 club year and state membership dues will be sent to Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa this month. The program books for 2013 were distributed to the members.

It was moved and seconded to pay the annual membership dues for Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa and to make donations to the horticultural and landscape design scholarships AFGC donates annually. Members also approved membership dues for the Iowa Arboretum.
