Class 1A, 2A district, substate pairings announced
Class 2A top-ranked Nodaway Valley appears to have a clear road to the substate final with its district grouping, but the Wolverines could face a rated foe in the substate.
Nodaway Valley was assigned to District 14 along with Central Decatur, Clarke, Interstate 35, Panorama and West Central Valley. The Wolverines have yet to play any of those teams, but square off with Interstate 35 in Truro on Friday in a battle of the last two remaining undefeated teams in the Pride of Iowa Conference.
Awaiting the winner of District 14 will be the winner of District 13, which could be sixth-ranked Des Moines Christian, which currently holds a 9-1 record. Also in District 13 are CMB, Baxter; Colfax-Mingo, North Polk, Roland-Story and Van Meter.
Aside from Nodaway Valley and Des Moines Christian, no other teams in the substate are currently ranked or receiving votes.
The Wolverines avoided a substate that could have included fourth-ranked IKM-Manning and Kuemper Catholic, which is currently receiving votes.
In Class 1A, fifth-ranked Murray has a tough road to the state tournament.
The Mustangs were placed in District 12 with Corning, Diagonal, East Union, Lamoni, Lenox, Martensdale-St. Marys, Mormon Trail, Mount Ayr and Orient-Macksburg.
Murray survived a two-point game against Lamoni and could face the Demons two more times before a potential district matchup. Murray also defeated Mount Ayr in the season opener, but the Raiders expect to have Jacob Sobotka back in time for district games.
Teams in District 11, which forms the other half of the substate, are Adair-Casey, Ankeny Christian Academy, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Earlham, Grandview Park Baptist, Guthrie Center, Iowa Christian Academy, Madrid, Woodward Academy and Woodward-Granger.
Ankeny Christian Academy is currently 9-0 and ranked 10th in Class 1A.
