COUNCIL BLUFFS — Creston/O-M handed Lewis Central its first dual wrestling loss of the season in convincing fashion Tuesday night, 54-18.

The Panthers, now 6-1 in the Hawkeye 10 and 9-1 overall, also rolled past Carroll Kuemper, 55-18. LC, now 3-1 overall and in the league, defeated Kuemper but the score was not available at press time. Glenwood continues to lead the Hawkeye 10 at 7-0.

Kuemper fell to 0-7 and 3-14.

Lewis Central was missing one of its best wrestlers at 195 pounds, but that is where the Panthers have No. 1-ranked Keaton Hulett, so the Titans’ loss didn’t have much effect on the outcome, Panther coach Darrell Frain said.

For the Panthers, Cole Tanner returned to the lineup at 220 pounds and secured a fall in 3:49.

“We got a lot of the close matches to go our way, and we got them on their back for (four) pins,” Frain said.

Gage Cheers, Joey Huntington, Wyatt Thompson and Tanner had falls for the Panthers. Trevor Frain and Jake Marlin had technical falls, and major decisions were posted by Stone Hammons and Jacob Johnston.

Marlin’s 17-2 technical fall was noteworthy in that it came at 152 pounds, after weighing in at 145, against LC’s Ethan Ruby, who recently moved down from wrestling at 170 and 160 pounds. Marlin, three-time state champion, is ranked No. 1 at 138.

“That kid was a physical kid coming down from 160,” Frain said. “Jake got takedowns and tilted him a bunch in the third period.”

Marlin had a 20-second fall in the Kuemper dual.

LC’s second-ranked heavyweight, Zach Renshaw, pinned Nathan Robinson, and two of the top Titans won at 160 and 182 pounds.

“They’re just not as good in the bottom half of the lineup and we controlled those matches,” Frain said.

Frain said the Kuemper match went according to form, with a bonus of an overtime 9-4 win at 152 by Gavin Leith against Kolby Hilgenberg,

“Hilgenberg has been ranked, so that’s a good win for Leith,” Frain said.

Kuemper’s Alexander Schmitz, ranked ninth in Class 1A, beat Gage Cheers 8-2 at 126 pounds.
