Halls breaks all-time steals record
Murray 75, Mormon Trail 31
GARDEN GROVE — Murray senior Austin Halls broke the Iowa High School Athletic Association all-time career steals record for all classes here Tuesday night, as he finished the game with nine steals.
That runs Halls’ total up to 390, surpassing the old record of 387 set by Hinton’s Jayson Thompson from 1988-91.
Halls made history late in the third quarter, after getting six steals to tie the record by halftime.
“It’s kind of a neat deal to break 2,000 (points) and then breaking the all-time steals record, and he has a chance at top five in assists, too,” head coach Darin Wookey said. “There’s not many kids that have those types of numbers in their career, ever. For him to have that many points and assists, to do what he’s doing is incredible. We’re just happy to have him at Murray. He’s a special kid to have around.”
Murray won the game, 75-31, over Mormon Trail.
Cody Scroggie led the Mustangs in scoring with 19 points, while Halls added 18. Halls filled the stat sheet with his nine steals and nine assists.
Sam Rockhold also scored in double figures for Murray, now 12-0 and ranked fifth in Class 1A, netting 13 points to go with five rebounds. Matt Johnston added eight points and Eddie Otto scored seven. Pat Kilmer contributed six points.
“Cody Scroggie bounced back with a good game and Sam Rockhold played well again, getting 13 points with five rebounds,” Wookey said. “Matt Johnston continues to play well for us on both ends of the floor.”
Murray hosts East Union on Tuesday.
Lenox 77, Orient-Macks. 39
ORIENT — A quick start helped spur Lenox to a 77-39 win over Orient-Macksburg here on Monday.
Frank Martinez scored a game-high 20 points for Lenox, while Mason Peterson recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Caleb Lange added 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Dustin Gordon also scored in double figures with 11 points.
The Tigers improve to 4-6 overall.
Chantz Davidson led the Bulldogs with 12 points, while Jacob Caviness added 11. Jesse Johnson netted six points and Jordan Thompson added four. James Sullivan, AJ Kralik and Seth White each scored two points for Orient-Macksburg.
CAM 49, Orient-Macks. 34
ANITA — CAM pulled away in the third quarter for a 49-34 win over Orient-Macksburg here on Tuesday.
The two teams entered the second quarter tied at 10-10, with CAM holding a 22-18 advantage at halftime.
But, a 22-4 run in the third quarter put Orient-Macksburg out of reach.
Jacob Caviness led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Jordan Thompson netted eight and Chantz Davidson added six. Jesse Johnson, James Sullivan and Wyatt Hensley each scored two points.
“We came out sluggish in the third quarter and just couldn’t match them,” head coach Drew Dornack said.
Mount Ayr 80, Clarke 48
MOUNT AYR — Jake Still exploded for 34 points on 15-of-22 shooting to lead Mount Ayr to an 80-48 win over Clarke here on Monday.
Still recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists and picking up three steals.
Braydee Poore added 12 points and seven assists with four rebounds. Austin Quick scored six points with four assists. John Triggs was the only other player in double figures, scoring 10 points. Dylan Doman added eight points with three assists and two steals.
Mount Ayr 69, Corning 38
CORNING — Mount Ayr improved to 7-4 for the season with a 69-37 win over Corning here on Tuesday.
Jake Still had another big game, this time scoring 34 points on 12-of-17 shooting, while also pulling down 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double.
John Triggs added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Braydee Poore scored nine points with nine assists and six rebounds.
Corning was led by Keegan Longabaugh with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds. Lance Swartz added seven points while Nick Spring scored six points with six rebounds.
“Our first half was some of our best basketball of the year,” Corning head coach Pete Nett said. “We moved the ball around well on offense to get good shots, and we rebounded pretty well given the physical mismatches we had with some of the kids our guys were matched up with. They pulled away in the second half, but all in all, I was pleased with how we fought hard the whole game.”
Diagonal 49, Seymour 24
DIAGONAL — Diagonal jumped on Seymour early in a 49-24 win here on Monday.
The Maroons held a 35-9 lead at halftime.
Junior Ryan Parrott led the Maroons in scoring with 14 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Jacob Taylor was the only other player in double figures with 10 points to go with seven steals, seven rebounds and six assists.
Shad Haidsiak and Levi Jarred each added seven points, while Heath Evans scored six for Diagonal, now 6-5 for the season.
