It was a night of special recognitions for the Creston/O-M state-ranked wrestling team Thursday night, during a pair of blowout victories over Perry (72-7) and Winterset (75-3).

In the first dual of the night, Winterset, now 6-4 for the season, topped Perry by a 51-28 score.

Creston/O-M, No. 5 in Class 2A on the latest Predicament ratings, had seven pins and five forfeit victories in defeating Perry. The Winterset match went even quicker, as the Panthers started the meet with six straight falls, ending with nine in all along with three forfeit victories.

Prior to the Winterset dual, the Creston/O-M team entered the gym carrying the T-shirt of Dalton Hribal, team member who died in a Nov. 23 auto accident. After that tribute, No. 1 ranked Keaton Hulett gained his career 150th victory with a hard-fought 4-0 win at 220 pounds over Winterset’s sixth-ranked Blake Glenn.

Earlier in the night, three-time state champion Jake Marlin was recognized for gaining his 175th career victory, which actually came Tuesday at Lewis Central. With two falls Thursday, Marlin now has 177.

The all-time Creston/O-M career leaders are Kalab Evans (181) and Andrew Long (180). Marlin could reach Long or Evans as soon as Saturday’s tournament at Centerville.

“If he would win out, he could get to 200,” said Creston/O-M coach Darrell Frain. “That’s an unbelievable accomplishment. The (state) record is over 200, but a lot of schools wrestle more duals than we do. To think about 200 for us, that’s amazing.”

In researching statistics for an Omaha World-Herald article on Thursday about Hulett, Frain discovered his No. 1-ranked 195-pounder was at 148 wins. He was set up to reach the 150 milestone in a matchup of rated wrestlers.

“For Keaton, 150 is amazing, because he started out with a lot of wins at 171 as a freshman and sophomore, which a lot of kids can’t do,” Frain said. “Tonight I felt really comfortable in moving him up against Glenn. I knew he could dominate on top, he just needed to get that takedown.”

Hulett’s second-period freight-train double leg takedown was the decisive move in the shutout victory.
