Remaining seasons starting to close
Iowa’s pheasant, late muzzleloader and archery deer, and fall turkey seasons closed today.
The January antlerless deer season is Jan. 11 to 20. Furbearer seasons, squirrel, quail, partridge and grouse remain open until Jan. 31.
Rabbit season is open until Feb. 28. Crow season is Jan. 14 to March 31. Pigeon season closes on March 31. Beaver trapping season closes on April 15.
For waterfowl in the south zone, the Canada goose season closes Friday and the light goose season closes Jan. 18. In the Missouri River zone, the Canada goose season and light goose season both close Jan. 18.
The light goose season in the north zone closes Jan. 13. The light goose conservation order season is open Jan. 19 to April 15 statewide; additional licenses and fees apply.
Third season
The final deer hunting season begins Friday in the 38 counties in southern and western Iowa where antlerless deer licenses are available.
Party hunting is legal and firearm hunters must wear blaze orange. Shotguns, muzzleloaders, handguns, and bows are legal options in all open counties. Centerfire rifles (.24 caliber or larger) are legal in the 21 counties in the southern two tiers of the state.
Last year, 81 percent of the 8,300 deer reported during the January antlerless season were does. To avoid harvesting a shed-antlered buck, hunters should pass up shots at lone deer and wait for deer traveling in groups of does and fawns.
The January anterless season closes Jan. 20. Hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Hunters may report their deer harvest at www.iowadnr.gov, by calling 1-800-77104692 or at any license vendor.
