Muriel Kneller Des Moines

Muriel Kneller, 93, of Des Moines died Dec. 25, 2012, at her home at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines.

A memorial service was held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at West Des Moines United Methodist Church. McLaren’s Chapel, West Des Moines, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Scottish Rite Park Good Life Fund.

Muriel Christ Kneller, daughter of Ethel (Rowe) and Clarence Christ, was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Lake Park.

After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 1939, Muriel moved to Prescott to teach elementary school.

On June 28, 1942, Muriel married Dale Kneller.

Muriel and Dale spent the first years of their marriage in San Diego, Calif., and both worked in the aircraft industry prior to Dale’s service in WWII.

After the war, the couple returned to Adams County, where they started a family and operated a dairy farm.

After 13 years on the farm, the family moved to West Des Moines, where Muriel continued her career teaching elementary school students, while earning a master’s degree at Drake University.

After more than 40 years as a teacher and recipient of the Elementary Teacher of the Year Award, Muriel retired in 1985.

Muriel was a member of West Des Moines United Methodist Church, P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa Iota, West Des Moines Women’s Club, Eastern Star and the Nobells. Muriel was also an active resident at Scottish Rite Park, where she regularly played piano and accompanied singers and choral groups. Muriel was an inaugural member of Friendship Force.

Muriel is survived by her daughter Kay (Bob) Riley; grandchildren Katherine Riley Harrington, Joe Riley, Ted Kneller and Alex Kneller; sister Arlene; and five great-grandchildren.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband; son Wendell (Jean Mountain) Kneller; parents; and brother Donald.
