Kuemper girls pull away in 4th quarter

Published: Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 11:18 a.m. CDT

An 11-3 fourth quarter broke open a competitive game, as the Kuemper Catholic girls claimed a 55-41 victory over Creston here Friday to lead off a varsity doubleheader.

Kuemper, now 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Hawkeye 10, barely escaped Creston last month at Carroll, 48-46, and had a less-than-comfortable margin of 44-38 after three quarters.

One critical stretch occurred just before halftime. With Kuemper leading 21-20, sophomore guard Kierstyn Bauyer sank one of her four 3-pointers. A Panther turnover and foul allowed Iowa State recruit Alexis Albrecht to sink two free throws.

The five-point swing opened up a 26-20 margin that became 28-21 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Brenna Baker and basket by Natalie Mostek closed it to 28-26 early in the third. Checlee Downing also hit a 3-pointer for Creston in the quarter, but the Knights took a 44-38 advantage into the final eight minutes, when the Panther offense suddenly turned ice cold.

“For three quarters, we were right there,” said Creston coach Larry McNutt. “Then we didn’t score for 5:54, when Chelcee hit a three at the 2:06 mark of the fourth. They put 11 points on the board during that run.”

McNutt said it was tough for Natalie Mostek to stay fresh on offense, charged with the task of defending Albrecht, who finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Bauer, the tall sophomore guard with extended shooting range, had a team-high 16 points.

Creston, now 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the conferece, has a week-long homestand starting tonight against 9-2 Osceola Clarke. Glenwood and Shenandoah visit on Tuesday and Friday, respectively. Glenwood, which lost four starters from last year’s state tournament team, was smothered by Lewis Central Friday, 56-18.

“We need to show up and give ourselves a chance against the South Division (conference) teams,” McNutt said.
