Panthers claim Big Red Invite
CENTERVILLE — Creston/Orient-Macksburg earned points at 13 of the 14 weight classes en route to claiming the team title at the Centerville Big Red Invitational here on Saturday.
The Panthers finished with 201.5 team points, 42 points ahead of second place Bondurant-Farrar. Lee’s Summit West finished third with 155 points.
Creston/O-M was paced by its three champions for the day — Jake Marlin at 138 pounds, Trevor Frain at 160 and Keaton Hulett at 195.
Marlin pinned his way to the championship bout, where he earned an 8-4 decision over Ottumwa’s Karsten Van Velsor.
“Jake, he pretty much dominated the last match,” head coach Darrell Frain said. “The kid kind of shut down on him, and he only won 8-4. I think it was a frustrating match for Jake. He’s going to have to get used to that, because that’s what people are probably going to start doing to him. He was never threatened in the match and never really threatened in the tournament.”
Marlin was also named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
After receiving the second seed in the 160-pound bracket, junior Trevor Frain went to work on the mat and showed he was deserving of the top seed.
Frain won by technical fall over Ottumwa’s Tad Howard, 19-3, in the first round and then pinned his way through the rest of the tournament, pinning Central Decatur’s Trenton Carson in the finals in just :34.
Senior Keaton Hulett, top-ranked wrestler in Class 2A at 195, met Centerville’s Riley Denny, the third-ranked wrestler at 195 pounds in Class 2A, in the finals after breezing his way through the tournament.
Hulett only surrendered an escape late in the second period, winning 4-1 over Denny.
“He pretty much controlled the match,” Frain said. “The kid was a pretty good legger on top. He turns a lot of people, and Keaton didn’t give him a chance to get him in and that pretty much dictated the whole match.”
Three Panther grapplers finished third for the day. Gage Cheers at 126, Gavin Leith at 152 and Seth Maitlen at 182 all brought home bronze medals.
Cheers got bumped down to the four seed and then later beat the wrestler who bumped him down from third to fourth.
Leith battled back after losing in the quarterfinals to Winterset’s Zach Moss and finished third after not even being seeded.
Frain said for Leith to finish third with the draw he faced after not being seeded was a good finish.
After losing a major decision to Centerville’s Houston Moore in the quarterfinals, Maitlen pinned his way to third place.
“Seth actually wrestled one of the poorer matches I’ve seen him wrestle all year, and then he turned it around,” Frain said.
Frain said he was also impressed by Nathan Robinson’s fourth-place finish, and by Cole Tanner and Wyatt Thompson, who each finished fifth.
“Wyatt Thompson was unseeded and he actually beat the four-seed and three-seed, and still got fifth in a weird bracket,” Frain said. “Nate Robinson had a good day there getting fourth. We had a lot of kids who wrestled good matches and scored a lot of points for us. Cole Tanner went right to the wire with the No. 1 kid in 3A and had every chance to win that match.”
The Panthers return to action Tuesday for a double dual at Shenandoah with the Mustangs and Red Oak.
