Juvenile charged, weapon hidden

Dyrell Thornton, 15, of Lorimor was charged Wednesday for trafficking in stolen weapons, possession of stolen property and probation violation.

According to an Afton Police report, Union County Juvenile Court Services were notified Wednesday by East Union School administrators of information received from Johnston School District that indicated Thornton may be in possession of a stolen handgun and negotiating with a students at Johnston and Abraham Lincoln high schools for the sale and or trade of the handgun and other handguns in possession of people in the Des Moines metro area.

According to Afton Police Chief John Coulter, the schools have a monitoring system on their computer systems that monitor key words such as guns and sexual assault.
