Dyrell Thornton, 15, of Lorimor was charged Wednesday for trafficking in stolen weapons, possession of stolen property and probation violation.

According to an Afton Police report, Union County Juvenile Court Services were notified Wednesday by East Union School administrators of information received from Johnston School District that indicated Thornton may be in possession of a stolen handgun and negotiating with a students at Johnston and Abraham Lincoln high schools for the sale and or trade of the handgun and other handguns in possession of people in the Des Moines metro area.

According to Afton Police Chief John Coulter, the schools have a monitoring system on their computer systems that monitor key words such as guns and sexual assault.

“The company that monitors these systems contacted Johnston (High School), and Johnston notified East Union (High School),” said Coulter.

According to Coulter, a search of the Thornton family home did not turn up the stolen handgun, but information and physical evidence was found consistent with information received by law enforcement that Thornton had been in possession of a stolen handgun.

“The gun may be hidden in the Creston area based on statements made by Dyrell and some of his friends,” said Coulter.

According to the Afton Police report, a search of the Creston area did not locate the handgun, which is still missing, and may be in the possession of other young adults in the Creston Area.

Thornton is being held at the Central Iowa Detention Center in Eldora and Coulter believes another student from Abraham Lincoln High School is in custody.

The investigation which started Wednesday is continuing. Thornton’s case will be handled in juvenile court.
