Spartan women compete with league power

BOONE — The outlook going in wasn’t good.

Southwestern women’s first game under interim coach Steve Tussey had been a 76-45 loss at Southeastern a week earlier. Four days later, Southeastern suffered a 66-46 defeat at DMACC.

Now, the 13-3 Lady Bears, who had been nationally ranked this season, were hosting the winless Spartans Saturday afternoon.

Yet, at halftime the Spartans were only down 11 points (33-22) and cut it to a six-point margin with seven minutes left. In the end, the Bears had too much firepower inside and finished with a 59-48 victory.

Falling behind early by margins of 7-2 and 20-7 proved to be a challenge, Tussey said.

“It took us awhile to get adjusted,” Tussey said. “They have 5-10 to 6-3 girls in the post who are physical and they were getting offensive rebounds. I thought we made tremendous progress from Saturday to Saturday.”

The next step, the former Orient-Macksburg coach said, is to cut turnovers down from 23 Saturday to the 15 range, and increase the shooting percentage from 35 percent against the Bears.

Morgan Knorr and Darian Polson each scored 12 points for Southwestern, now 0-3 in the conference and 0-16 overall. Freshman Carlee Schuhmacher had her ninth consecutive double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds for DMACC, now 3-1 and 14-3.

Ellsworth, which lost to 17th-ranked Southeastern Saturday by just one point (53-52), visits Southwestern Wednesday for a 5:30 game. The Panthers are 1-3 in conference play and 8-10 overall.
