Creston/O-M dominates Shenandoah, Red Oak
Marlin breaks school wins record
SHENANDOAH — The Creston/Orient-Macksburg wrestling team easily defeated both Shenandoah and Red Oak here on Tuesday in double dual action, collecting a total of 15 pins for the night.
The Panthers collected seven pins against Red Oak in a 62-15 win, and eight pins against Shenandoah in a 54-25 win.
“That’s one of those things for us — a lot of times we get pins going and it snowballs,” head coach Darrell Frain said. “It makes a close match turn into a big margin, and that’s what happened again for us tonight.”
Highlighting the night for the Panthers was senior three-time state champion Jake Marlin, who eclipsed the school record for career wins with his pin against Red Oak’s Isaac Pappas in :55 during the night’s opening match.
Marlin also earned a pin against Shenandoah’s Tyler Dalley in :46, giving him 183 career wins, surpassing Kalab Evans’ mark of 181 career wins.
Marlin moved past Andrew Long (previously second place with 180 career wins) and tied Evans with his four wins at the Centerville Big Red Invitational on Saturday.
His career record now sits at 183-6.
“It’s a major accomplishment, I think because a lot of the other teams wrestle a lot more matches than we do,” Frain said. “First of all, passing the 180-win barrier is a big accomplishment. And he’s passing a two-time state champ in Kalab Evans and a three-time state champ in Andrew Long, both of whom have done great things for the Creston/O-M wrestling program. So the fact that Jake has passed them is pretty impressive.”
Frain had to shuffle his lineup with several wrestlers out with injuries.
Spencer Wray, who has wrestled at 126 this season, is out for the year with ligament damage in his thumb. Gage Cheers, who placed third at 126 in Saturday’s tournament, missed Tuesday’s double dual as a precaution to make sure he did not have a fractured jaw.
And 113-pounder Wyatt Thompson missed Tuesday’s action after being hospitalized overnight Monday. Thompson was released on Tuesday but did not compete.
Junior Kruz Adamson filled in at 113 pounds, while Alex Fargo wrestled at 120 pounds. Garret Taylor and Bryce Briley split time at 126.
“We’ve got a lot of kids that are pretty equal in ability, so when you lose somebody, we’re comfortable they’ll step up and wrestle well,” Frain said. “It showed tonight. They all wrestled well.”
Frain said the biggest match of the night was Adamson at 113 against Shenandoah’s Zac McCoy.
“Kruz was going to try to make 113 anyway, so he made the cut and had a couple of really good matches,” Frain said. “He was losing 1-0 (against McCoy), got a reversal and put a cradle in and got the win. He outworked the kid and got the pin, so that was probably one of the biggest matches of the night.”
The Panthers return to action Friday and Saturday at the John J. Harris Invitational in Corning.
