Glenwood girls coach Barry Loeffelbein had been waiting for an offensive “breakout” game from his team.
The Rams suffered through a 56-18 loss to Lewis Central Friday, then on Monday led Harlan 14-11 at halftime before going scoreless for an entire quarter in a 43-30 defeat.
On Tuesday, senior guard Grace Newman caught fire with 29 points as the Rams pulled away to a 53-39 victory over Creston.
“That’s what happens when you let a righthanded player dribble with her right hand all night,” said Creston coach Larry McNutt.
“Thank goodness Grace was hitting, because for awhile there, there wasn’t a lot of scoring going on again,” Loeffelbein said. “We do a little better when teams play us man. Grace is able to drive and get to the basket a little better, and kick out to open shooters. When teams have been playing us zone, that forced us to shoot (outside) a lot.”
The Panthers could not duplicate the sharp performance of Monday’s 59-46 home triumph over Clarke, which fell to 9-3 with that loss. Glenwood now stands 8-5 overall and 6-2 in third place in the Hawkeye 10.
“Glenwood is better than Clarke,” McNutt said. “I told the girls we kind of abandoned what was working last night — free throws and getting the ball inside. We would not have beaten Clarinda and Clarke without getting the ball inside.”
Glenwood played mostly a zone defense with an active press after scoring in the first half, before switching to more man-to-man in the second half. Creston had some miscues getting into its offense, committing 19 turnovers for the night while shooting only 30 percent at 13-of-43.
At the free throw line, Creston was barely above 50 percent at 12-21.
Nobody scored in double figures for Creston, now 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the Hawkeye 10. Zaidy Frank scored nine points and Chelcee Downing had eight.
On Friday the Panthers host Shenandoah, which beat Denison-Schleswig Friday, 46-43, to improve to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in the Hawkeye 10.
“Our guards will have to play well and give us good weak side help Friday,” McNutt said. “They have two pretty good post players.”

A shorthanded Creston JV team lost to Glenwood Tuesday, 45-31.
Taylor Briley injured a foot in the freshman game and Camryn Somers was out with illness. Creston was down to seven total players, with Jenna Taylor available for only two quarters because of freshman and varsity duty.
“We weren’t able to substitute much,” coach Mendy McCreight said.
Olivia Nielsen led Creston (8-7) with 13 points and five rebounds.

Giving away too many possessions and rebounds cost the Creston freshman girls in a 52-34 loss to Glenwood Tuesday.
Creston had 30 turnovers in the game. Taylor Briley was a bright spot with 12 points, six rebounds and two assists for the Panthers (7-5), Jenna Taylor provided 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
“Rebounds and turnovers,” coach Mallory Peterson said. “Once we got in the halfcourt we did well against their zone, but we turned it over too many times against their pressure.”
