Virginia Van Surksum Omaha, Neb.

Virginia (Stamper) Van Surksum, 82, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Creston, died Jan. 14, 2013, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25, Creston. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Open visitation with family present will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society or Creston Lincoln Library Project. Virginia Jean (Stamper) Van Surksum, daughter of Lena Carrie (Allen) and Virgil Eugene Stamper, was born May 26, 1930, and raised in Creston.

Upon graduation from high school, she attended Creston Junior College and completed her college education at Drake University in Des Moines, earning a degree in elementary education and art.

In 1952, Virginia began her teaching career in Creston.

On Sept. 2, 1961, Virginia married Edwin Van Surksum, who was from Alton.

They moved to Omaha, Neb., where she continued her teaching profession at District 66 Schools.

Virginia is survived by her husband Edwin Van Surksum of Omaha, Neb.; sister-in-law JoEllen (Merle) Sorgdrager; nieces, Kathy (Mark) Vant Hul and Jami (Russ) Robers and double cousin Bernard (Carolyn) Stamper.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents.
