Rose Sondgeroth Carroll

Rose Sondgeroth, 90, of Carroll died Jan. 19, 2013, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Rev. Andrew Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Open visitation will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas and a Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. by Holy Spirit Parish. There will also be visitation 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to Carroll Public Library or Holy Spirit Parish. Rose Sondegeroth, daughter of Rose (Hoffman) and Otto Kasperbauer, was born July 12, 1922, in Carroll.

She grew up in Carroll and attended Saints Peter and Paul School.

On April 21, 1942, Rose married Alfred Sondgeroth at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Carroll.

In 1960, Rose and Al purchased the El Capitan Motel and moved to Creston.

In 1970, when they moved back to Carroll, they owned and operated the Blue Bird Grocery Store.

Rose worked at Carroll Public Library. She received the Everyday Hero Award.

Throughout her lifetime, she cleaned homes, worked for the General Electric plant for 13 years, Carroll Area Daycare Center, Daily Times Herald, Holy Spirit Elementary and Library, where she worked with the summer reading program.

Rose was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Carroll Catholic Daughters of Americas and the Foster Grandparent’s Program of Carroll County.

Rose is survived by her daughters, Dorothy (Ron) Dunphy of Creston and Alice (Bill) Brown of Carroll; grandson Todd (Susan) Dunphy of Creston; granddaughter-in-law, Dana Dunphy of Anthum, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Colton, Austin, Brian, Henry and Amy Dunphy; sister Bette Bluml of Carroll; sisters-in-law, Inez Kasperbauer, Irma (Art) Reicks and Pat Sondgeroth, all of Carroll; brothers-in-law, Jerry Schulte of Marshalltown and Jerry Steenson of Omaha, Neb.; many nieces, nephews and many friends.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband in July 1973; infant daughter Janice Rose; grandson Tom Dunphy; brothers, Jack and Andy Kasperbauer; sisters, Lucille Lasher, Loretta Venteicher and Annie Kasperbauer; sister-in-law Jean Kasperbauer; and brothers-in-law, Otto Bluml, Duane Lasher and Clarence Venteicher.
