MASON CITY — An active, trapping defense kept Southwestern off balance in a 63-36 conference loss at NIACC Saturday.

A 24-6 run over the final 11 minutes of the first half propelled the Lady Trojans to a 37-17 halftime lead to take control of the game.

Southwestern shot 28 percent from the field in falling to 0-18 overall and 0-5 in the conference. NIACC improved to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

“They full-court pressed basically the entire game, except the last couple of minutes,” said SWCC interim coach Steve Tussey. “They kind of wore on us physically with good athletes. They were trapping in their 2-3 zone. We had shot opportunities, but they weren’t falling and we fell behind.”

Kourtni Stumpf scored 11 points for Southwestern, which travels Wednesday to Marshalltown (6-11, 1-4). Marshalltown picked up its first conference win Saturday over Southeastern, 65-54.
