Panthers draw tough regional assignment
The Creston girls basketball team found out its postseason fate Monday when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced its regional pairings.
The Panthers draw a tough Class 4A Region 7 that includes a pair of Hawkeye 10 foes, and teams from central Iowa.
Creston must travel to Glenwood to take on the Rams in the opening round of the regional at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13.
The Rams already own a pair of victories over the Panthers this year, defeating them 51-34 in Glenwood on Dec. 7 and again 53-39 in Creston on Jan. 15.
Should the Panthers survive that test against Glenwood, the road doesn’t get any easier, as Class 4A ninth-ranked Lewis Central hosts the winner of the Creston vs. Glenwood game.
Lewis Central defeated Creston 63-27 back on Nov. 30. The two teams meet again on Feb. 2 in Council Bluffs.
The Titans scored a four-point victory over Glenwood on Dec. 4 and then routed the Rams in Glenwood, 56-18, on Jan. 11.
The other side of Region 7 includes Carlisle, Knoxville and fifth-ranked Indianola.
The state berth from Region 7 will be decided at 7 p.m. on Feb. 19 in Atlantic.
In Class 2A Region 6, Mount Ayr draws a tough matchup in the first round, traveling to Leon to take on Central Decatur at 7 p.m. on Feb. 9.
Central Decatur owns a 39-31 road win over Mount Ayr already this season.
The winner of that game moves on to take on 12th-ranked Des Moines Christian in Urbandale on Feb. 12.
Other teams in Mount Ayr’s half of the bracket include Madrid, Colfax-Mingo and 13th-ranked Woodward-Granger. On the opposite side of the bracket are Van Buren, Pekin, Cardinal, Eddyville-Blakesburg, Pella Christian and North Mahaska.
In Region 7, Nodaway Valley draws a bye in the first round and will play the winner of West Central Valley and Van Meter at 7 p.m. on Feb. 12 in Greenfield.
The Wolverines could face second-rated IKM-Manning in the regional semifinals in Manning. Underwood or Griswold would meet IKM-Manning in the quarterfinals.
On the opposite side of the bracket are AHST, Riverside, Clarinda Academy, East Mills, Audubon and Treynor.
Class 1A Region 7 is loaded with area teams.
East Union meets Lamoni on the road in the opening round on Feb. 7, while Lenox hosts Corning and Orient-Macksburg travels to Villisca.
Murray awaits the winner of East Union and Lamoni on Feb. 12. The winner of Corning vs. Lenox meets the winner of the Orient-Macksburg vs. Villisca game in Villisca.
On the opposite side of the bracket sits Sidney, Nishnabotna, CAM, Stanton and top-ranked Bedford.
