SWCC performs well in first track meet
Comments (...)AMES — Things got off to a smooth start for the Southwestern Community College track program here on Saturday, as the team competed well at the Iowa State Track and Field Open.
“It was an exciting day,” head coach Bill Huntington said. “We talked about this with the kids, 30 or 40 years from now when you look back at you ran track, you realize you were the first kids that ran Southwestern varsity track and field. It was good to get that first one out of the way. I think it was really exciting to see how competitive we were, because we were extremely competitive.”
Sophomore Kalli McCann of Osceola had a strong race in the 3,000 meter run, finishing sixth overall with a time of 11:29.66, which puts her in the ballpark for qualifying for the national meet.
Regina Hafner finished 19th in the race with a time of 12:52.39.
“I think right off in the 3,000 open, Kalli finishing sixth overall and really only about 23 seconds off of qualifying for nationals, which I think that’s doable,” Huntington said. “First race out of the block and they practiced over break, but only organized practices those last four days going in. Regina ran a really solid 3,000.”
Sophomore Mariah Kruse of Afton also impressed Huntington with her performance in the 400 meter dash.
Kruse finished 36th overall, and won her heat with a time of 1:03.96.
Huntington said one of the most impressive races of the day for the Spartans was the 600 yard run, where Rayvonne Brown and Joe Bierl each performed well.
Brown finished 40th in 1:16.40 and Bierl finished 53rd in 1:19.14.
“Going in, we were talking 1:24,” Huntington said. “Ray ran a 1:16.40, so he just missed qualifying for the 600 yard run by about .23 of a second. Joe ran a real nice race in that. This weekend, they’re both going to be in the 600 meters. I think, at least by the end of the season, that’s something they both have a good shot in.”
Huntington said sophomore Dave Prchal ran good races in both the 3,000 meters and the mile.
The Spartans return to action Saturday at the Dutch Athletics Classic in Pella.
