Spartan women come close on road

MARSHALLTOWN — Marshalltown Community College women never trailed in its women’s game against Southwestern Community College Tuesday, but the Spartans got as close as two points with four minutes to play.

MCC pulled away at the free throw line as Southwestern had to foul to get possession late, in a 62-52 final.

Marshalltown improved to 2-4 in ICCAC Division II action and 7-11 overall. Southwestern fell to 0-6 and 0-19, but interim coach Steve Tussey said it was the most complete effort his squad has shown since the holiday break.

“After the NIACC game, we came back and played well,” Tussey said. “We were down 12 at half (31-19) and we were down seven against Ellsworth and came back. We need to be within four or five at halftime to make our run and get ahead. Now, we’re making our run to catch up, and that’s it.”

“They have lost a lot of five- and 10-point games,” MCC coach Alison Lacey said. “They are not a bad basketball team.”

Five players reached double figures for the Tigers, but not season leader Mady Van Metre, who was limited to one point.

“One of their players (Shantai Tobler) who was 0-for-3 up to that point and 17 percent on the year, hit a three to push it to five (at the 2:25 mark) after we cut it to two points,” Tussey said. “From there it stayed five or six until we had to start fouling in the last 50 seconds.”

Jamee Miner led Southwestern with 22 points and three steals.

Third-ranked Kirkwood, leading the conference at 8-0 and 19-3 overall, visits Southwestern for a 1 p.m. game Saturday.
