Daryl Bradley, 92, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Creston, died Jan. 24, 2013, at Providence Place Nursing Home in Minneapolis, Minn.
Mass of Christian Burial services were 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 28, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. The Rev. Kenneth Halbur Jr. officiated. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Creston with military honors by Theodore J. Martens VFW Post No. 1797. Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to St. Malachy School. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.
Daryl James Bradley, son of Rosemary Elizabeth (Walsh) and Edward James Bradley, was born March 26, 1920, in Creston.
Daryl’s family moved to Chicago in 1924, where he attended an all boys school.
The family returned to Creston in 1932.
Daryl was enrolled in school in Creston and entered high school in 1934. Daryl graduated from Creston High School in 1938.
In 1940, Daryl joined the United States Navy. He went to the Great Lakes Training Station and was assigned to the Battleship Arkansas. In 1943, he was assigned to the Amphibious Forces and went overseas to Algeria and Africa and was involved in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno. Daryl served in the Navy from Nov. 4, 1940, until Nov. 18, 1946.
On April 29, 1942, Daryl married Evelyn Marie Baker in Missouri.
After his discharge from the Navy, he worked in the oil business for awhile and at Coca Cola in Creston. He then worked as a railway mail clerk for a few months and was called back into the service during the Korean War in 1951. Daryl served again in the Navy from April 9, 1951, until March 10, 1953.
After his discharge, Daryl worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail clerk on the train from Minneapolis to Kansas City for more than 35 years. He retired in 1976 at age 55.
Daryl is survived by his children, Roselyn (Loren) Schultz of Cedar Rapids and Dennis (Bridget) Bradley of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother Eddie Jack (Jan) Bradley of Cedar Rapids; sister Dorothy Myers of West Des Moines; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2000; daughter Jacqulyn McCraken in 2002; and brother-in-law Mike Myers.
