Southwestern's Miranda Williams looks to get off a shot against the defense of Kirkwood's Bianca Dufelmeier during Saturday's game. Third-ranked Kirkwood sank 15 3-pointers, including six by Dufelmeier, in beating the Spartans 99-40. Williams had two points.

Third-ranked Kirkwood women made 15 3-pointers in routing Southwestern here Saturday, 99-40.

The Eagles improved to 9-0 atop the ICCAC Division II standings, and 20-3 overall. Southwestern, which trailed 51-26 at halftime, fell to 0-7 and 0-20.

“We scouted them against Marshalltown and they went about 1-for-20 on threes,” SWCC interim coach Steve Tussey said. “So, they’re either on or off. But I’ve never seen a team shoot like that in person. They were shooting it well, and then when they weren’t making it they were crashing the boards for offensive rebounds. They play 11 girls and they can all play.”

It was unfortunate timing for the Spartans. Kirkwood coach Kim Muhl was reportedly unhappy with his team’s performance in a four-point victory over Iowa Lakes.

“He challenged them to come out and play better,” Tussey related. “They are legit.”

Kaley Folkerts and Jamee Miner each scored 12 points for Southwestern. Miner had seven defensive rebounds. Morgan Knorr handed out four assists.

Southwestern has another challenge on Wednesday, taking on Iowa Central in Fort Dodge. The Tritons improved to 5-2 in the league and 14-5 overall with a 71-52 victory over Southeastern on Saturday.
