DENISON — After a 10-8 first quarter, the Denison-Schleswig girls pulled away from Creston with a 15-4 second quarter on the way to a 52-32 victory Friday night.

Creston ended up with 13 more turnovers (33 to 20) and subsequently 16 fewer shot attempts (48 to 32) in the 20-point defeat. The Lady Monarchs also outscored the Panthers 9-3 from 3-point range.

The one highlight for Creston was at the free throw line, going 11-of-12 with attempts from six different players.

Senior Rachel Koch had 17 points for Denison-Schleswig, which improved to 4-6 in sixth place in the Hawkeye 10, and 9-8 overall. Natalie Mostek was the lone Panther in double figures with 10 points as Creston fell to 2-9 in ninth place in league play, and 5-13 overall.

“We had way too many turnovers to give ourselves a chance to score,” said Creston coach Larry McNutt. “Denison’s quickness gave us problems and we didn’t attack it aggressively in the first half.”

The second half was much more competitive, as Creston was outscored 16-11 in the third period and 11-9 over the final eight minutes.

Creston did manage a 27-21 rebounding advantage, led by Mostek with eight and Brianna Maitlen with six. Chelcee Downing scored seven points, including the team’s lone 3-pointer.

The Panthers are idle this week until Friday’s varsity doubleheader against Red Oak, which is the tean’s senior night observance and also the school’s “Color Blast” promotion for cancer awareness. The team will wear pink uniforms for the 6 p.m. varsity game. All proceeds will go to various causes, including American Cancer Society and students in the school district fighting diseases. Many T-shirts were pre-ordered, but there will be some available for sale at the game.

Red Oak is right above the Panthers in Hawkeye 10 play at 3-6, and 7-9 overall, and Friday’s matchup counts in conference play. But, it will take a better effort than a 64-31 defeat at Red Oak on Dec. 21.

“We will get back to practice this week and try to get better and get ready for Red Oak,” McNutt said.
