Government: Please be more conservative

(Continued from Page 1)

I voted for U.S. Congressman Tom Latham in November essentially for one reason — his top priority is reducing the $16.5 trillion debt facing this great country. That was his focus throughout his campaign against incumbent Leonard Boswell.

That's still his focus today. He told the Creston Rotary Club Monday he's willing to work in a bipartisan manner and do what's best for this country even if it means his demise in the next election.

That's what we need in this country. Real men and women who care less about getting re-elected and more about what moves this country in the right direction. Quit pointing fingers at one another.

Have you seen the movie "Remember the Titans?" Don't laugh, it's a good movie, and there is a scene in that movie where Coach Boone (Denzel Washington) takes his mixed — half white, half black — football team on an early morning preseason run. Similar to the problems in Washington today, his mixed football team could not get along. There was distrust, malice and even hatred.

The run concluded at Gettysburg National Cemetery.

He tells them:

"This is where they fought the battle of Gettysburg. Fifty thousand men died right here on this field, fighting the same fight that we are still fighting among ourselves today. ... You listen, and you take a lesson from the dead. If we don't come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don't care if you like each other or not, but you will respect each other. And maybe... I don't know, maybe we'll learn to play this game like men."

Please, politicians, get in a room together, be cordial and respectful to one another and start finding solutions to this country's problems. And, first and foremost, start finding solutions to this mounting debt.

We must be more conservative at the federal, state and local levels. Don't spend more than you bring in. Live with less. Don't vote for big raises when your nation, state or county is millions, billions or trillions in debt. Don't continue to spend money like this country has it.

It's unsustainable.
