The Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau and Des Moines Area Sports Commission announced Monday their finalists for the 2012 Central Iowa Sports Awards.
The Central Iowa Sports Awards recognize the best athletes, teams and games of the year. All nominated activities must have occurred within a 75-mile radius of home plate at Principal Park in Des Moines.
Austin Halls, the multi-sport standout athlete from Murray, is one of four finalists for the High School Male Athlete of the Year.
Joining Halls as finalists for the award are four-time state champion wrestlers Cory Clark of Southeast Polk and John Meeks of Des Moines Roosevelt, and Ankeny quarterback Joel Lanning.
During 2012, Halls was named to the Des Moines Register elite all-state football team as a defensive back, while also being named to the Iowa Newspaper Association first-team all-state for Eight-Man football, and being named Eight-Man captain of the all-state team. During the summer season, Halls led the the state in batting average for all classes, hitting at a .603 clip. Halls led the Murray basketball team to a district final appearance during the 2011-12 season as well.
The public is encouraged to cast their votes for the best athletes in Greater Des Moines. Voting for the 2012 Central Iowa Sports Awards will be live through Sunday, Feb. 10 at www.facebook.com/catchdesmoines. Votes may also be emailed to email@example.com by Feb. 10. Winners will be announced in March.
Other categories that can be voted on include High School Female Athlete of the Year, High School Team of the Year, which includes Martensdale-St. Marys baseball; High School Game of the Year, College Male Athlete of the Year, College Female Athlete of the Year, College Team of the Year, College Game of the Year, Professional Athlete of the Year, Professional Event of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award.
