Requirements to be named academic all-state are a senior starter, 3.7 grade point average, involvement in other extracurricular activities and coach’s recommendation.

Halls was an all-state quarterback for the Murray 8-Man semifinal team in 2012, and also named to the Des Moines Register’s Elite All-State Team as a defensive back. He was named 8-Man all-state captain by the Iowa Newspaper Association, and helped the Mustangs make it to the state championship game in 2011.
