Interesting weather we are having this month

I’m not sure from day to day if I need to be wearing my shorts or my snow boots.

We have had some really cold days and then we get a couple of warm days. We have had rain, sleet and snow this month. Some days you can ice fish and in the same week you can’t because of the ice opening up.

In January, so far, we have had five days in the 50s, one day in the 60s and five days with lows in the single digits.

The pond near Greater Regional Hospice Home was half unfrozen on Tuesday and most of the rest of this month it was frozen over. I guess if you don’t like the weather today, just wait a day or two and it’ll change!

Friends

The Friends of the Library are back taking orders for their annual Valentine’s cookie bouquets in support of the library.

If you would like to order a bouquet, they are $10 for six cookies and $15 for 12. This year you can even get gluten-free cookies. A box of those is $12. The money raised goes to the summer reading program. You can call the library at 782-2277 to place an order.

Doing the summer reading program as a kid is probably one of the reasons I got into journalism. It was always a lot of fun and it sure helped with my reading skills throughout my school and professional career. I would encourage any parent to get their kids involved in the summer reading program. It is a valuable program for any kid.

Super

This Sunday is the big day if you are a pro football fan.

The Super Bowl in on Sunday evening 5:30 on CBS. That is if you can make it through the eight hours of pregame that will be on before the game.

A few of the big day facts are: A 60-second commercial goes for around $4 million, 11.2 million pounds of potato chips will be consumed Sunday, along with 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips, 4.3 million pounds of pretzels, 3.8 million pounds of popcorn and 2.5 million pounds of nuts.

I get a gut ache just thinking about all that food.

I see tickets for the game online are going for around $5,000 for an average seat.

I predict the winning team will have a coach with the name of “Harbaugh.”

Ground Hog

Saturday is Ground Hog Day. I really don’t care if we have six more weeks of winter or not. I wish the darn thing could predict if it is going to be a wet or dry spring so the farmers would know if they should plant corn or cactus this year!

12-13-14

Feb. 12 is Lincoln’s Birthday, the 13th is Ash Wednesday and the 14th is Valentine’s Day. There are all kinds of things to celebrate that week.

Although, Presidents Day is on the 18th of the month, so the feds will have to wait to have another day off. Like they need one!

Chuck

Our Sen. Chuck Grassley will be in Union County on Tuesday, Feb. 19. He will be at the Afton Community Center from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. That is your chance to ask him any questions you might have. He will be in Mount Ayr at 1:45 p.m. and Osceola at 5:15 p.m. the same day.

Thoughts for the week: From former Super Bowl coach Vince Lombardi: “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society. The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”
