Panther bowlers get preview of Regional lanes
LEON — The Creston/Orient-Macksburg bowling teams got a sneak preview of what the Regional Tournament will look like in Leon on Feb. 14, when they traveled to Leon to take on Central Decatur on Saturday.
Head coach Ron Pendegraft called Saturday’s meet a learning lesson, and said his team “survived” the meet, coming away with wins from both sides.
The Panther boys defeated Central Decatur 2216-1345, while the girls had a much closer match with the Cardinals, winning 2134-2014.
“Both teams won, which is good,” Pendegraft said. “It was very difficult. Lane conditions were inconsistent and kids had a tough time figuring out what to throw and how to throw it. It was tough.”
Pendegraft said his team had a very low spare percentage, and that first shots were going into the gutters.
“They struggled, but they kind of kept after it and kept trying to make the shots and get through it,” Pendegraft said. “I guess more than anything, we survived the meet more than anything else.”
Scores on both sides were lower than what the Panthers have normally thrown this year, because of the lane conditions.
Chantz Davidson led the Panthers with a two-game series of 338, while Josh Sawtelle rolled a high game of 185 on his way to a series of 330. Darin Hatfield finished with a 292, while Blake Eddy contributed a 277 and Kenny Wynn tallied a 273. Jacob Wolfe finished with a 205.
Anna Wilson led the Panther girls with a two-game of 325 while Devon Eddy finished close behind with a 316 while rolling the high game of 181. Emily Davidson finished with a 294 and Shaylen Kipp rolled a 282. Charley Parcher finished at 255 and Madison Hance rolled a 224.
“It kind of opened their eyes as to what to expect when we do go down there for Regionals,” Pendegraft said. “All of the surprise will be gone. Now, they’ll have a little better idea of what they need to do to make adjustments. It was a tough day, but we learned a lot. Sometimes the best lessons are learned with a little bit of pain, and we definitely had some pain on Saturday.”
The Panthers host two home meets before the Feb. 14 Regional Tournament in Leon.
The Panthers host Lewis Central and Norwalk on Saturday, and then host Denison on senior day on Feb. 9.
