Paul Parkhurst Lenox

Paul Parkhurst, 77, of Lenox died Jan. 29, 2013, at Lenox Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Lenox United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at Ritchie Funeral Home, 124 S. Main St., Lenox. Interment will be in North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials may be given in Paul’s name. Online condolences may be left at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com.

Paul Luverne Parkhurst, son of May (Hunsicker) and Orville Parkhurst, was born Jan. 19, 1936, at the family home southeast of Hatfield, Mo.

Paul attended grade school at Arrington country school. He started his high school years at Hatfield and attended Eagleville for his senior year, graduating in the spring of 1953.

Paul was a member of the Missouri National Guard from 1953-1959.

Paul graduated from Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Mo., in May 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and physical education.

In the fall of 1957, Paul took jobs as acting principal, boys and girls basketball coach, teacher and school bus driver at Martinsville High School in Missouri.

On June 1, 1958, Paul married Phyllis Jean Martin at the Silver City Methodist Church in Iowa. They started up housekeeping in a country home west of Eagleville.

Paul taught at Martinsville through the spring of 1960. During the summer and the next two years, he worked at gas stations. During one of those years, he helped his father run the state line station south of Lamoni.

After accepting a teaching job at Corwith-Wesley School for the fall of 1962, Paul and his family moved to northern Iowa. He taught junior high science classes, coached junior high girls basketball and driver's education. He also drove a school bus route.

They moved to Corwith. Paul officiated basketball and football.

Paul received a stipend for a science class at the University of Omaha during the summer of 1963, so the family moved to Phyllis’ parents and spent the summer on the farm.

In 1964, he started working toward a master’s degree in elementary education administration from the University of Omaha. He received his master's degree in the fall of 1967.

In 1968, Paul became elementary school principal in Lenox. The family moved June 8, 1968, to Lenox. He served as elementary principal for the next 27 years, retiring in the spring of 1995.

Paul was a member of the Iowa State Education Association and lifetime member of the National Education Association.

Paul was a member of the United Methodist Church and Lenox Rotary, where he held several offices.

Paul spent summers from 1969-1995 painting with his friend Vernal.

Paul is survived by his wife Phyllis Parkhurst; children, Kirk (Candee) Parkhurst of Fremont, Mich., Kent Parkhurst of Lenox, Kristine (Bill) Herkelman of Cedar Rapids, Kreg (Morgan) Parkhurst of Waukee, Kimberly (Larry) Herring of Lone Tree and Kara (Mike) Larson of Corning; grandchildren, Kristin Boswell, Trisha Herring and Brett, Katie and Rachael Parkhurst; great-grandchildren, Trinity and Tristin Herring; brothers, Loren (Myra) Parkhurst and Carl (Gladys) Parkhurst; sister Viola Buckley; brother-in-law Marvin Richter; sisters-in-law, Beverly Parkhurst and Veva Jane Parkhurst; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Garland and Edna Martin; brothers, Alvin and Rollan Parkhurst; half sister Melva Jean Ramsey; brothers-in-law, Lee Buckley and Dale Ramsey; sister-in-law Lois Richter; niece Leanna Buckley; great-niece Marlena Parkhurst; and special family member Karen McKee.
