Spartan men, women fifth at Dutch Athletics Classic

PELLA — Both the men’s and the women’s Southwestern Community College track and field teams finished fifth place in the team standings at the Dutch Athletics Classic here on Saturday.

Those performances were highlighted by a pair of top-two finishes, with one coming on each side.

Freshman Rayvonne Brown of Daveport got the men’s team off to a good start with his second-place finish in the 600 meter run.

Brown clocked a time of 1:25.87, just getting beat out by Central’s Nick Barnes, who ran 1:25.75.

“It was a weird heat,” head coach Bill Huntington said. “They had three heats of it and when they got ready for his heat, everyone scratched except for him and the Central kid, so it was just a two-man heat in the fast heat. It came right down to the last 20 yards. Ray pulled up beside him and (Barnes) just outleaned him at the end.”

Freshman Joe Bierl of Davenport finished fifth in the event, coming out of the first heat.

Dave Prchal finished sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:06.22 as both he and Josh Cobb scored points for the Spartans in that event.

Jackson Shantz finished eighth in the 55 hurdles with his time of 8.62.

The 4x400 relay team of Terrence Gay, Shantz, Bierl and Brown took fifth place after finishing in a dead heat with Central’s “C” team in the second heat.

The Spartan quartet ran a time of 3:38.81, compared to Central’s 3:38.77

“The had to go to the camera for it,” Huntington said. “It was a dead heat. That was fun to watch.”

Huntington said that despite just missing the finals in the 55 dash and 200 meters, Marquis Flowers made big improvements since the meet last week.

Women

The highlight of the day for the women came in the 3,000 meter run as sophomore Kalli McCann of Osceola won the event with a time of 11:29.98.

McCann also doubled up and took third place in the mile run with a time of 5:56.63, just :02 behind Simpson’s Lindsey Borgomainerio for second place.

“Kalli was outstanding in the 3,000,” Huntington said. “She won that, and then she came back and she was third in the mile. She ran a strong race the whole time.”

Freshman Molly Schimp of Hampton set the tone for the day with her fifth-place finish in the high jump to start the day off.

Schimp cleared 4 feet, 9 inches in her first competition of the season.

“I was pretty impressed with what she did in the high jump,” Huntington said. “She had some nice run ups, and just clipped the third one. She’s going to end up going a lot higher by the end of the year. I thought she did a nice job. What I liked about it, was the whole team was sitting there watching her, and that just kind of set the tone for how the rest of the day went.”

Mariah Kruse and Regina Hafner both scored points in both the 600 meter run and the 1,000 meter run, a double that is difficult to pull off, Huntington said.

Peyton Wilkenfeld of Elk Horn just missed qualifying for finals in both the 55 dash and the 200 meters in her first meet of the season.

The Spartans return to action Saturday at the Hilltop Meet hosted by Coe College in Mount Vernon.
