GREENFIELD — Nodaway Valley broke away from a 36-36 tie early in the fourth quarter to defeat visiting Mount Ayr girls Thursday, 47-39, in a makeup game from Tuesday’s postponement.

Mount Ayr had four critical turnovers against Nodaway Valley’s aggressive defense during a stretch in which the Wolverines moved ahead 44-36 with 4:10 to play.

The Wolverines had a couple miscues of their own with the ball while operating a delay game, but made just enough free throws to hang on for the victory.

Nodaway Valley was 13-of-22 at the free throw line in the game, while Mount Ayr was 6-10 in falling to 9-10 overall and 8-6 in the Pride of Iowa Conference. NV improved to 12-7 and 10-4.

“Too many key, costly turnovers,” Mount Ayr coach Thad Streit said.

Nodaway Valley had a 26-20 lead through two quarters.

“We ran the floor pretty well in the first half,” NV coach Tom Thompson said. “We played better defensively tonight and shot 50 percent from the floor to beat a solid Mount Ayr team. Both teams turned it over a lot, but we used an 11-3 run to close out the game.”

Sydney Reeves scored a game-high 14 points with nine rebounds and three assists for Nodaway Valley. Shelby Venteicher had nine points, four assists and four steals.

Brook Rychnovsky and Caitlin Giles each scored nine points for Mount Ayr.
