Virgil Findley Mount Ayr

Ganum Virgil Findley, 86, of Mount Ayr died Jan. 26, 2013, at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr.

A prayer service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. The Rev. Terry Roberts will officiate. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter. Military rites will be conducted by IA ARNG Honor Guard and Carlisle V.F.W. Post No. 2099. Open visitation will be noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Visitation with family present will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established to Mount Ayr Public Library and American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172 in Mount Ayr.

Virgil Findley, son of Mary Leora (Harding) and Ganum Alvin Findley, was born Oct. 7, 1926, in Grayson, Mo.

Virgil grew up in northern Missouri and was living in Wichita, Kan., when he was drafted into the U.S. Army Feb. 21, 1945.

After his honorable discharge Oct. 3, 1946, Virgil farmed for his father for several years before subsequently rejoining the military.

After his honorable discharge Nov. 14, 1958, Virgil returned to Ringgold County to farm for Denzil Waugh in the Redding area.

Virgil was a 50-plus year member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 617 in Redding.

Virgil is survived by his sister Ellen Sue Findley of Creston and 15 cousins.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and sister.
