ESTHERVILLE – The Southwestern Community College women’s basketball team looked poised to collect its first win of the season here on Saturday, trailing just 25-24 at halftime against Iowa Lakes.

For a team that has closed the gap in the second half of games numerous times since interim head coach Steve Tussey took control, things looked encouraging.

But, Iowa Lakes held on to defeat the Spartans 54-47, thanks to a 29-23 second half advantage.

“It was kind of a back-and-forth first half,” Tussey said. “The second half we got down seven, and then tied it up. Then it was kind of back and forth again. We were down three with :30 left and had to foul, so it was basically a one possession game the entire second half.”

Jamee Miner led the way for the Spartans, scoring 18 points with five rebounds and three assists. Freshman Darian Polson also finished in double figures, scoring 10 points with seven rebounds.

Southwestern shot well from the free throw line at 10-of-12, but Iowa Lakes held a decided advantage in attempts, making 23-of-28 at the charity stripe.

Sunday Duop and Carla Barrera each scored nine points to lead the Lakers.

The Lakers also outrebounded the Spartans, 42-26.

“There were times where if we could have cleaned it up, we could have built a lead, but neither team could build a lead,” Tussey said. “We had our chances. They continue to play hard.”

The loss drops the Spartans to 0-22 overall and 0-9 in ICCAC play. Southwestern returns to action at home tonight against Southeastern.
