The Creston Panthers boys basketball team got a glimpse of its future Monday, when the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced the district and substate pairings for Class 3A.
The fifth-ranked Panthers (16-2) start the postseason journey at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 at home against a Winterset (9-8) team that the Panthers defeated 67-52 on Monday (see related story).
Creston is seeded third, and sits in a District 15 with top-seeded Class 2A second-ranked Atlantic (17-1), which opens at home against ADM, Adel (3-15).
The winner of those two games advance to the district final at 7 p.m. on Feb. 21 in Greenfield.
“If we can beat Winterset and it ends up being Atlantic, that’s a pretty small gym to have two top-10 teams playing each other in 3A,” head coach Billy Hiatt said. “It will be hard to find a seat. We have played there. That helps.”
On the District 16 side of Substate 8, Carroll (14-2) hosts Greene County (6-13) in the opening round, while Harlan (11-5) hosts Glenwood (8-8).
The winners of those two opening round games meet on Feb. 21 in Denison to determine the District 16 champion.
The District 15 champion will meet the District 16 champion on Feb. 25 at a location to be determined.
The most recent BCMoore computer rankings, released Monday, have Creston ranked third in Class 3A, while Atlantic is ranked ninth. Harlan checks in at 14th, while Carroll is 27th.
Glenwood is ranked 33rd, Winterset 39th, ADM 54th and Greene County is ranked 55th.
The BCMoore rankings are a computerized ranking system composed by Brent Moore, that takes into account strength of schedule, offensive average and defensive average.
