CORNING — Junior Dustin Hoyt scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out four assists in leading East Union to a 22-point victory over Corning Tuesday.
Sophomore Cole Campbell scored 14 points, making eight of 11 free throws, and had a team-high seven assists. Grant Hall grabbed 10 rebounds while scoring eight points, and Jesse Akers provided seven points and six rebounds.
East Union (3-17) took command of a close game by outscoring the Red Raiders 21-9 in the third quarter.
“We suffered a setback when Keegan Longabaugh went down in the first minute with an ankle injury, but I was really pleased with how hard we played, especially when trying to catch up,” said Corning coach Pete Nett.
The Red Raiders (1-20) were hampered by 25 percent shooting. Lane Peterson had 11 points, two steals and two assists. Nick Spring added eight points, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Ryan Carlson had seven points and a pair of steals.
Mount Ayr 73, Lenox 43
MOUNT AYR — After trailing only 28-24 at halftime, Lenox fell behind quickly in the second half in a 30-point defeat Tuesday.
“We played two different halves — one solid and one not,” said Lenox co-coach Karl Peterson. “Mount Ayr really did well, especially in the second half. Freshman Spencer Brown really did a good job scoring 20 points for us.”
Brown also had eight rebounds for Lenox (12-9). Mason Peterson provided seven points and three assists. Caleb Lange turned in six points and eight rebounds for the Tigers, 8-8 in Pride of Iowa play. The Tigers play at Adair-Casey Friday.
Mount Ayr (14-7) was led by Jake Still with 19 points, six assists and five steals. He also blocked three shots. Still was 5-for-5 from 3-point range.
Braydee Poore had a good overall game with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals. Dylan Doman dished out five assists while scoring nine points. John Triggs and Jack Jones each scored seven points.
Murray 85,
Mormon Trail 47
MURRAY — The ninth-ranked Mustangs outscored Mormon Trail 25-5 in the second quarter on the way to Tuesday’s 85-47 victory.
“This was our first game in over 10 days and we just really wanted to get up and down the floor and give the seniors a chance to go out and have some fun,” said coach Darin Wookey. “I thought we played well offensively, but ewe had some breakdowns defensively.”
Austin Halls had a triple-double with 30 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists and seven steals. Sam Rockhold provided 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Wookey said Johnston had one of his best games, finishing with eight points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Cody Scroggie added 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for Murray (19-1). Pat Kilmer and Andrew Rider finished with eight and seven points, respectively.
Ben Heath led Mormon Trail with 14 points and Brett Lee added 13.
Murray plays at Martensdale-St. Marys Friday night.
Diagonal 41,
Essex 39
ESSEX — Diagonal outscored Essex 12-7 in the fourth quarter to overtake the Trojans, 41-39, Tuesday night.
Heath Evans led Diagonal with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jacob Taylor finished with 11 points, three assists and three steals. Blake Butler had nine points and Shad Haidsiak turned in six points. Ryan Parrott grabbed six rebounds while scoring three points.
Nick Williams led Essex (2-19) with 13 points and five steals. Austin Wood had 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Diagonal (11-10) opens district play Feb. 14 at Mount Ayr.
