CHS jazz band takes second at Simpson Jazz Festival

Creston High School jazz band took second place Feb. 1 at Simpson Jazz Festival at Simpson College in Indianola.

“This is the highest finish the Creston High School jazz band has ever placed at this contest,” said Creston High School Band Director Mike Peters.

Annette Reasoner, alto saxophone; RaeAnne Hopkins, trumpet; Theo Hartman, trombone; Adam Bochart, trap set; and Chris McCutchan, bass, were all named outstanding soloists.

Chris McCutchan was also named outstanding bass player for Class 3A and received a $25 scholarship to Simpson Summer Jazz Camp.

The jazz band also received a Division I rating from every judge Jan. 12 at the Iowa High School Music Association’s State Jazz Festival. The festival was held at Atlantic High School. It was the first contest of the year for the jazz band and the sixth Division I rating in a row.

The CHS jazz band will next be competing Saturday at the Bluffs Jazz Festival at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs.
