Spartans 10th at Hilltop Invite

MOUNT VERNON — The Southwestern track and field teams faced tough competition here at Saturday’s Hilltop Invitational hosted by Cornell College.

Both the men and the women finished 10th in the team standings, but had several placings in strong fields.

Both Molly Schimp and Kalli McCann finished fourth in their respective events.

Schimp improved her mark in the high jump from last week, finishing fourth with a jump of 4 feet, 11.75 inches. McCann led most of the 3,000 meter run before placing fourth in 11:39.03.

“Molly added almost an inch and a half to her high jump and looked really good doing it. She landed on the bar on her last two attempts, and that was coming down, not going up,” head coach Bill Huntington said. “Kalli had a really nice race in the 3,000. It wasn’t her best race of the season, but she led the majority of the race.”

Mariah Kruse of Afton finished sixth in the 400 meter dash with her time of 1:05.07.

“I thought that was a tremendous race,” Huntington said.

The women’s 4x200 relay team finished sixth overall, and ran a quality time despite having a botched handoff, Huntington said.

On the men’s side, Marquis Flowers finished fifth overall in the 200 meter dash.

Flowers clocked a time of 23.56. Terrence Gay placed 14th in the same event with a time of 24.34.

“Another race I was really happy with was Marquise in the 200,” Huntington said. “That field was jacked. That was a pretty impressive race.”

The Spartan men ran well in the relays, finishing sixth in the 4x400 relay and improving its time over last week’s race, while also finishing seventh in the distance medley relay.

Jackson Shantz finished 11th in the 60 meter hurdles, and just missed out on the finals in that event.

Zach Ruth made his debut for the Spartans in the shot put and finished second in his flight.

“We added Zach Ruth and he’s going to be a shot putter for us,” Huntington said. “I was really pleased with him. Second in his flight, and that was a nice, nice job for his first meet out.”

The Spartans are off this weekend before traveling to Storm Lake for the regional meet next weekend at Buena Vista.
