With temperatures reaching the 40s this week, ice conditions are deteriorating and the free youth fishing clinic scheduled Saturday at Green Valley State Park has been cancelled.
The event was co-sponsored by Iowa Department of Natural Resources and High Lakes Outdoor Alliance.
Corey Carlton, DNR conservation officer who coordinated the inaugural event along with HLOA volunteers, said safety concerns led to the decision.
“I think there will still be some fishermen out on the ice this weekend,” Carlton said, “but with youths involved we didn’t want to push it. We’ll go ahead and have it next year, but we’ll look at possibly moving it up a little earlier.”
