Northeast Nebraska showed why it’s ranked 23rd in Division I junior college women’s basketball with an 81-47 victory over Southwestern Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks, ranked 13th, improved to 23-2 for the season as the Division II Spartans fell to 0-23.

Jamee Miner contributed in several phases for the Spartans, finishing with a team-high 14 points, two steals and five assists. Taylor Zimmerman added 11 points.

Northeast raced to a 44-27 lead at halftime. Jayon Spencer scored 18 points for the Hawks, and interim SWCC coach Steve Tussey said the duo of 6-3 Ivana Vuletic of Sweden and 6-0 Taya Novokreschenova of Russia proved to be a challenge inside for the Spartans, whose tallest post player is 5-11 freshman Darian Polson.

“Northeast is right up there with Kirkwood, they are a complete team,” Tussey said. “They are very talented with two legit posts. (Vuletic) played on a national team in Sweden.”

Still, the Spartans’s effort was consistent, Tussey noted.

“We played hard for 40 minutes,” he said. “They’re still competing, and looking to get better with three weeks to go.”

Another tough challenge awaits Wednesday, as the women’s 5:30 game against DMACC tips off the Greater Regional Cancer Awareness activities in the Spartan gym.

“It’s a good cause, and we should have a nice crowd,” Tussey said.

DMACC, coached by former Iowa player Steve Krafcisin, is ranked 16th in Division II at 19-6 overall and 8-3 in league play, tied with Iowa Central for second behind Kirkwood.
