East Union 54, Mormon Trail 45

AFTON — After a low-scoring first half, the East Union boys exploded in the third quarter on its way to a 54-45 win over Mormon Trail here Monday in the first round of Class 1A District 12 action.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-17 for the season, and advance to the district quarterfinal round on Thursday in Lamoni against the Demons.

That matchup tips off at 7 p.m.

East Union trailed 8-6 after the first quarter, but bounced back to take a 17-14 lead into the halftime break.

The Eagles came out in the third quarter and scored more points in that quarter than they did the entire first half, using a 20-9 third quarter advantage to build a 37-25 lead.

Mormon Trail outscored the Eagles 22-17 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t dig out of the hole East Union put the Saints in during that third quarter.

Sophomore Cole Campbell led the Eagles with 12 points, shooting 8-of-13 from the free throw line. Campbell also dished out six assists with five steals and three rebounds.

The junior trio of Trevor Barnett, Jesse Akers and Grant Hall attacked the glass for the Eagles, each finishing in double digits rebounding.

Barnett grabbed 13 boards to go with his nine points, while Akers pulled down 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Hall secured 10 rebounds, seven of which were offensive, and scored nine points with five blocks.

As a team, East Union grabbed 48 rebounds.

Dustin Hoyt pitched in eight points with four rebounds, while Sean Schmitz and Brandon Wittstock each netted four points for the Eagles.

Mormon Trail finishes its season at 6-16.
