The world didn’t end

Creston

Please note that this letter is being written as a private individual living in the state of Iowa. These are my thoughts and only my thoughts.

Memories – Remember the old hospital on Oak Street? I was born there, now sits an apartment complex.

Remember the Roundhouse? Creston was known for many years because of it, now gone, no one really cared enough to preserve it.

Remember how downtown (sorry uptown folks, it was downtown back then) was packed on Saturday and Monday nights? We had a Penny’s, Sears, Coast to Coast, Green Stamp store, jewelry store, Ben Franklin, Horseshoe Café, Wallace Drugs, just to name a few places. Iowana, how very fortunate we were that someone took an interest in this beautiful old building and restored it! Or this would have also been gone, at a lot of taxpayers’ money.

Gibson Memorial Library, center of town, remodeled historical building for Creston Iowa. Now they want to move it to Lincoln School, another old building, yes, attended K-6th grade there – memories. Ask someone how much this will cost? It is a school, not a library. I strongly believe that the citizen’s of Creston should be able to vote on this decision – if they say move, then so be it, at least they had the option to cast their vote.

Now the Harman/Taylor house, which of course, does not sit on McKinley Lake property, but has just always been part of the park. To save two lots, water front property, we are tearing down a home that shouldn’t be. Thought came to mind, what is going to happen to Taylor Park? If I was building a new $250,000 or more home, think I would want to see the lake, not the kids and people enjoying Taylor Park – so now does that also go away?

Change happens – change is good – change happens sometimes in a matter of seconds. Still we need to keep some of those memories to help our children know something about their past. With modern technology, people are already doing bills on the Internet, buying books on Nooks and Kindles ... homework for college is being submitted through the computer to the instructors.

Affordable housing is what we need in Creston, not more high-priced, so now we will have 88 lots to place these new single-family homes, townhomes and duplex on. Do you really believe that number 1, our local banks are going to be able to afford loans to everyone? Number 2, just how many are even going to be able to think about purchasing one of these homes?

Memories – we need to keep some of them – if we continue to destroy – the memories go away.
