DES MOINES — East Union’s Bryson Kinyon and Kain Queck of Nodaway Valley wrestle in the Class 1A quarterfinals today after advancing with victories Thursday in the State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

A third area Class 1A wrestler, Corning 182-pounder Zach Barton, stayed in contention in the consolation bracket with a victory Thursday morning after a first-round defeat.

Mount Ayr’s lone entry, Erik Freed, was eliminated Thusday with two losses in the 132-pound weight class.

Kinyon, ranked sixth at 170 pounds with a 43-1 record, drew a tough challenge today in third-ranked Luke Huber of Hudson (40-2). Huber advanced with a 34-second pin in his opening match, while Kinyon was dominating a 12-2 major decision over Brennen Grimm of English Valleys.

Kinyon, whose only regular-season defeat this year is to Class 2A 160-pound qualifier Trevor Frain of Creston/O-M, needed only a few seconds to secure the first takedown of the match, and built momentum from there.

“That’s what we want him to do, go out and attack right away and don’t let up,” said East Union coach Steve Kinyon, Bryson’s father.

Kinyon used an unorthodox nearfall combination to score six back points in the match.

“Yeah, I don’t have a name for that move,” Kinyon said. “I lock their hand in my legs, the one closest to their legs. And I put a half-(nelson) on the other side.”

“I don’t know what that is, but he sets it up,” coach Kinyon said.

In looking to today’s quarterfinal match against Huber, the Eagles coach expected an entertaining bout.

“He wrestles a lot like Bryson,” coach Kinyon said. “He likes to shoot and hammer the head. It should be a good, competitive match.”

With a win this morning, Kinyon would be set up for a semifinal match this afternoon with either seventh-ranked Devin Chesler of West Marshall or No. 5 Nick Schany of Emmetsburg.

A morning loss would put Kinyon in a must-win consolation match this afternoon against fourth-ranked Ryder Clark of West Hancock, who lost his opening match to top-ranked Brendan Schott of North Linn, 5-1. Clark rebounded with a dominating 13-2 consolation victory Thursday.
