Marlin, Hulett to face familiar foes in finals
DES MOINES (11:30 p.m. Friday) — Creston/O-M seniors Jake Marlin and Keaton Hulett will face recent opponents in their championship matches Saturday night in the State Wrestling Tournament.
Joining Denver-Tripoli's Brandon Sorensen in seeking a fourth state championship, Marlin (55-1) will take on Adam Staudt of Charles City (35-6) in the 138-pound finals. At Wednesday's State Dual Tournament, Marlin won a 13-3 major decision against Staudt.
Hulett, meanwhile, will have his third meeting of the season with Centerville's Riley Denny (44-7). Hulett (50-1) beat Denny 4-0 at the Centerville Tournament and 5-1 in the district finals.
Hulett had an exciting, but possibly costly, 1-0 semifinal victory over third-ranked Luke Johnson of Charles City. Hulett escaped in the second period for the match's only scoring. But, with 10 seconds left one of Johnson's fingers caught Hulett in his left eye.
After the match the eye was swollen shut, as he sat awaiting ice to treat the swelling.
"I can't see out of it at all," he said.
Marlin cruised to a 23-9 major decison over Alan Perry of Bondurant-Farrar. However, with one match left in his career, he remains tied with former Williamsburg heavyweight Austin Blythe for Iowa's all-time career pin record of 146. He has 203 total career victories.
Also still alive for Creston/O-M is junior 160-pounder Trevor Frain, who won a 5-0 consolation victory over seventh-ranked Collin Barger of Osage. Frain (54-4), ranked fifth, can finish anywhere between third and sixth on Saturday. Consolation rounds begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Also involved in consolation matches to end up between third and sixth are Nodaway Valley 152-pounder Kain Queck and East Union 170-pounder Bryson Kinyon.
In the Class 2A team race, Creston/O-M is fifth with 53 points. The top 10: 1. West Delaware 121; 2. Mediapolis 86; 3. Davenport Assumption 73; 4. Union, LaPorte City 57.5; 5. Creston/O-M 53; 6 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 51; 7. Charles City 49.5; 8. Bondurant-Farrar 43; 9. (tie) Clear Lake and Denver-Tripoli 41.

DES MOINES — Two Creston/O-M wrestlers successfully battled through Friday afternoon's quarterfinal round at the State Wrestling Tournament, with hopes of return engagements in the Saturday night finals.
Panther history-maker Jake Marlin quickly disposed of Missouri Valley's Brett Marcum for the second time this year, racking up a 9-1 lead before pinning him in 1:15.
In his first two matches at state, Marlin has spent a total of 1:51 on the mat. A win by fall against Alan Perry of Bondurant-Farrar in tonight's (Friday) semifinal round would make him Iowa's all-time leading pinner.
Marlin's pin against Marcum tied him for the career-pin record of 146 held by former Williamsburg heavyweight Austin Blythe (2008-11), now an offensive lineman at the University of Iowa. His career record is 202-6, including 54-1 this season.
The only time he has yielded any offensive points by the opposition was in his lone defeat to Daniel Lewis of Blue Springs, Mo., in the finals of the Kansas City Stampede.
Marlin and Denver-Tripoli 145-pounder Brandon Sorensen are now two matches away from being Iowa's 22nd and 23rd four-time champions.
"It's something I want," Marlin said, "because it's such an elite club."
Keaton Hulett, Panther 195-pounder, could become a two-time state finalist with a victory tonight.
He cleared a big hurdle with a pin in 4:31 against 50-1 Christian Brobst of Sioux City Heelan Friday afternoon. Brobst, Hulett's most physically imposing opponent of the Iowa high school season this year, had a 1-0 lead on Hulett in a defensive-minded match early in the third period.
"I really thought Keaton would get away, and we'd go into sudden victory at 1-1, because that's the kind of match you'd expect from those two," Creston/O-M coach Darrell Frain said. "But as he was standing up, Keaton was able to switch and put Brobst to his back with 1:29 remaining.
Hulett's semifinal opponent is Charles City's Luke Johnson, the third-ranked senior who lost a 2-0 match to Hulett in Wednesday's state dual tournament. Johnson was a 12-2 quarterfinal winner over Central Clinton's Jake Feldpausch.
Last year, Hulett reached the 195 finals, where he was defeated 3-2 by West Delaware's Adam Reth, a semifinalist at 220 this year. He enters tonight's match with a 49-1 record. Like Marlin, his lone defeat came in the finals of the Kansas City Stampede.
Junior 160-pounder Trevor Frain will be on the medal stand Saturday night. He was derailed from his goal of the finals with a loss by fall to Sawyer Anderson of New Hampton in the quarterfinals. Anderson is coached by former Panther assistant Nick Hemann.
Frain rebounded with a 7-2 victory over Jake Sherman of Saydel in a consolation elimination match. He still could finish as high as third.
Not so fortunate was Panther heavyweight Nate Robinson, who lost a 3-0 consolation match to Hampton-Dumont's Mario Pena. In his first season in the varsity lineup, Robinson compiled a 42-21 record.
• Marlin and Hulett are the only area wrestlers seeking spots in Saturday's finals. Nodaway Valley's Kain Queck battled, but came up short in a 3-0 loss to two-time defending state champion Loren Williams of Tri-Center in a 152-pound semifinal in Class 1A.
Queck will place anywhere between third and sixth, pending consolation results.
• East Union's Bryson Kinyon was defeated 19-10 by Hudson's Luke Huber in the quarterfinals, but battled back to clinch a placewinning medal by beating Ryder Clark of West Hancock, 17-9, followed by a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over West Marshall's Devin Chesler.
• Eighth-ranked Colton Spaur of Knoxville defeated Cole Bonde of Bedford/Lenox, 14-2, in a consolation elimination match at 182 pounds in Class 2A. Bonde was earlier ousted in the quarterfinals, 10-2, by Nikko Wheeler of Humboldt.
