Queck, Kinyon earn sixth-place medals

DES MOINES — Kain Queck of Nodaway Valley and East Union’s Bryson Kinyon each placed sixth Saturday in the Class 1A State Wrestling Tournament.

Corning’s Zach Barton, meanwhile, was ousted in the second consolation round in the 1A 182-pound weight class.

The eighth-ranked Queck made it to the semifinals at 152 pounds, where he was shut out by Tri-Center’s Loren Williams, 3-0. Williams went on to win his third state title. After losing his first-round match at state as a freshman, Williams went on to win 17 straight matches at state over four years.

After starting the tourney 2-0, Queck dropped his final three matches to finish 42-8 as a senior. He was defeated 12-8 by Tanner Arnold of West Marshall, in the fifth-place match.

Kinyon matched his state rating (No. 6) in falling to Luke Huber of Hudson for the second time. Huber took the fifth-place medal with a 16-5 major decision after earlier beating the Eagle senior in the quarterfinals, 19-10.

In between, Kinyon had a good consolation bracket with victories of 17-9 and 10-6 before meeting Huber for fifth.

“He’s a strong kid,” East Union coach Steve Kinyon said of Huber. “That kid took it to him from the start in their first match.”

After disappointment last year in missing a district wrestleback match because of a broken thumb, there was some satisfaction in standing on the medal stand Saturday, coach Kinyon noted.

“He wanted to go out his last one as a winner,” Kinyon said. “But he’s wanted to get here for a long time, and he did it and got a medal. He was healthy all year for a change.”

Coach Kinyon said Bryson’s future plans are “up in the air,” although wrestling at William Penn University is a possibility.
