Thanks for joining 1 Billion Rising
From Jody Nedley-Newcomb, Phi Theta Kappa sponsor/sociology instructor, Southwestern Community College
I wish to thank a number of people who worked hard to provide an educational, motivational, emotional event, Join 1 Billion Rising, on Thursday, Feb. 14, at Southwestern Community College. As much as I am trying to include everyone, I most likely will miss someone — all support is deeply appreciated.
Samantha Takes, SWCC music major and Phi Theta Kappa member, initiated and organized a local rising (http://onebillionrising.org/) which addressed the outrage at the 1-plus billion women globally who at some point in their lives will be beaten or raped.
Vickie Hodge (executive director, Rural Iowa Crisis Center) and staff provided outstanding support to Samantha and information of local statistics and government legislation affecting citizens in our area.
Jen Frakes, Zumba instructor, volunteered to lead the global dance “Break the Chain,” which was danced around the world on V-Day.
The housekeeping and maintenance staff of SWCC for setting up the stage, chairs, etc.
Matt Thompson supported and aided Samantha in organizing the event and other administration, faculty, and support staff for supporting and attending.
Thank you to KSIB radio for interviewing Samantha and Vickie to advertise the event, and Creston News Advertiser for taking pictures to share.
A big thank you to the young men who volunteered their voices and time to provide poetry and music, as without the involvement of EVERYONE, violence cannot be stopped.
