Cold shooting buries Spartans

IOWA FALLS — Cold shooting dug the Southwestern Community College women into a hole they couldn’t dig out of here Saturday in a 70-33 loss to Ellsworth.

The Spartan women drop to 0-26 overall and 0-12 in the ICCAC with the loss.

Southwestern shot just 9.6 percent from the field in a first half that saw the Spartans get outscored 38-8.

“We were 3-for-31 the first half,” interim head coach Steve Tussey said. “The offense, we were getting the shots we wanted, we just weren’t making them.”

The Spartans played a much more competitive second half, losing that half by a score of 32-25.

“When you fall behind like that, you kind of start to try too hard,” Tussey said. “We were getting the shots we wanted. We just needed to keep taking those and hope that they’d start falling.”

Miranda Williams led the Spartans with 10 points, while Brittany Clark added seven and Darian Polson dropped in six points. Kourtni Stumpf scored five.

Southwestern played its second straight game without sophomore all-region guard Jamee Miner, whose season is over after having surgery to repair ligaments in her shoulder.

“Some girls have had to take on new roles,” Tussey said. “She was our primary ballhandler and leading scorer, so we’ve had to have other people step up for her.”

Southwestern hosts NIACC on Wednesday, with action starting at 5:30 p.m.
