Murray season grinds to halt in substate loss

URBANDALE — Tempo was key in Murray’s 70-61 district final win over Mount Ayr Friday in Truro, and it also played a key role in the team’s 50-37 loss to Ankeny Christian Academy in the substate final Saturday in Urbandale.

“It wasn’t in our favor,” Murray head coach Darin Wookey said following Saturday’s season-ending loss. “We talked about pressing, but ... as good of guards as those guys are, I don’t know if we could have.”

Wookey was referring to Ankeny Christian junior JJ Waddle and sophomore Damon Stubbs, who thrust the dagger into Murray’s heart with 18 and 17 points, respectively, combining to score the final 21 points of the game for the Eagles.
