Spartans fall off pace in second half

In the first meeting on Jan. 19, Southwestern’s women played Marshalltown Community College within one possession for most of the game until being forced to foul in an attempt to extend the game late.

In the rematch here Saturday, the Spartans found themselves in a similar position at halftime, trailing 40-39 after a late Marshalltown basket gave the Tigers the lead.

But, the Tigers came out with a more aggressive scheme on defense in the second half in pulling away to an 83-61 win over the Spartans.

Southwestern drops to 0-28 overall and 0-14 in ICCAC play with the loss.

“The offense was efficient,” interim head coach Steve Tussey said of the first half. “We were making shots. Kind of like to give up a few less points than that, but it was one of our better offensive halves.”

Morgan Knorr scored 13 points with three 3-pointers and Kaley Folkerts added 10 points in the first half to pace the Spartans.

Marshalltown came out in the second half and amped up the defensive pressure, playing fullcourt man-to-man defense and being more aggressive in its halfcourt defense, holding Southwestern to just 22 second-half points.

“They kind of turned up their defensive pressure and started playing some fullcourt man-to-man, making it more difficult to get the ball up the floor and being more aggressive in the halfcourt,” Tussey said. “Fatigue became a factor as well as their defensive pressure.”

Southwestern shot 40.7 percent from the field, including 5-of-11 from behind the 3-point arc and shot 12-of-18 at the free throw line.

Three Spartan players scored in double figures, led by Knorr’s 15 points. Folkerts dropped in 13 points and Darian Polson added 10 points.

Polson also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Brittany Clark pulled down six.

But 17 turnovers hampered the Spartans.

“It might have been our best offensive game as far as numbers go,” Tussey said. “Probably one of our better efforts, just couldn’t quite get it done.”

Southwestern travels to Kirkwood on Wednesday before hosting Iowa Central on Saturday in the regular season finale.
