A little paint can make a dramatic difference.
That’s the belief of the Paint Creston Committee that again plans to give a minimum of three local homeowners the opportunity to receive free paint to paint the outside of their home. This is the fourth year the committee has offered the program.
“I didn’t realize how expensive paint was until we started this project in 2007,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ellen Gerharz. “A gallon is anywhere from $30 and up, so if you’re dealing with a two-story house you can spend almost $1,000 on paint.
“This program helps maintain the integrity of our communities and our city and helps the homeowners, some of which could not otherwsie afford the paint.”
Gerharz said, in the past, some homeowners have felt that any general upkeep of their property will increase the assessed value on their home and thus have not kept their property up. This is not correct. According to Union County Assessor Gene Haner, “The assessment on a home will not raise if the home is painted or re-roofed contrary to popular belief.”
Applications for the program are available at Creston Chamber of Commerce.
Applications will be judged on: condition of the home, ability of the homeowner to afford painting, homeowners willingness to maintain the property, homeowners willingness to participate in the program (publicity) and the home being painted needs to be owner occupied (not a rental).
In order to be considered by the selection committee, each homeowner needs to complete the application and mail or return it no later than 5 p.m. May 10 to the Chamber office, 208 W. Taylor Street.
The mailing address is PO Box 471, Creston, IA, 50801 and the Chamber email address is email@example.com. For questions, call the Chamber office at (641) 782-7021.
The selection committee will be composed of members of the Image Enhancement Committee of the Creston Chamber of Commerce. This project has benefited one dozen homeowners since 2007.
Gerharz did note, if the painting is not completed by the Oct. 8 deadline, the homeowner will reimburse the Creston Chamber of Commerce for the full retail price of the materials.
