Veda McCarty, 79, of Prescott died March 3, 2013, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, after a battle with leukemia.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 7, at the United Church of Christ in Prescott. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Prescott. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today with family present 5 to 7 p.m. at Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home, 905 Benton Ave., Corning. Memorials may be directed to the family. Veda Marie (Bailey) McCarty, daughter of Iris (Heckman) and Thomas W. Bailey, was born Sept. 19, 1933, in the countryside near Wiota.
She grew up attending Maple Grove Country School and graduated from Anita High School in 1951.
On July 26, 1959, Veda married Laverne McCarty.
Before being married, Veda volunteered with many of the Anita 4-H and church clubs.
Her first job was with Anita High School as their school board secretary.
After marriage and moving to Prescott in 1959, Veda worked with Prescott youths, as well.
Veda worked for Prescott Community School in the library and at Corning Public Library. She became the director at Prescott Pubic Library, retiring only a few years ago.
Veda was the first woman president of Adams County Farm Bureau Board.
Veda was a member of Prescott Disciples of Christ Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of Prescott Church Quilters.
Veda is survived by her husband Laverne McCarty of Prescott; children, Katie (husband Tim) Rhamy of Corning, Karl (wife Julie) McCarty of Prescott, Kimberly (husband Michael) Fourez of Corning and Karen (husband Mark) Finck of Rock Valley; sister Vesta Duensing of Metaire, La.; brother Varel (wife Jackie) Bailey of Anita; sister-in-law Carol (husband Ken) Foster of Creston; grandchildren, Ryan and Rusty Rhamy, Alexander and Ciara McCarty, Miaya Fourez and Lyla, Rebecca and Tyrel Finck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Veda was preceded in death by her parents; brother Verde; brother-in-law Loren and in-laws, Charlie and Nellie McCarty.
